From Northern Ontario to 'A Wicked Muse': An In-Depth Conversation with Mark Brombacher
In a recent episode of Featured Artist Podcast presented by Azhda, we sat down for an in-depth conversation with actor, writer, and indie Producer Mark Brombacher. The wide-ranging discussion explored Mark's journey from a childhood in Northern Ontario through a successful detour into software development, culminating in his return to storytelling and the creation of his feature horror film, A Wicked Muse (2026).
“There was a huge, like, 16-year period in my life where I had given up on acting. I thought I would never act or write or do anything creative again. I was just a coder.”
— Mark Brombacher, Featured Artist Podcast
Mark's feature film, A Wicked Muse (2026), grew out of his fascination with psychological horror. The story explores the premise of a writer whose creative force stems from a malevolent origin, centered on a protagonist who believes they can manipulate dark forces without being consumed by them.
To bring the project to fruition, Mark adopted a grass-roots production strategy. Self-financing a significant portion alongside small contributions from industry colleagues, he partnered with production company Sage Sky led by Cassidy Lawson and Shauna Halberma and co-directors Nick Talon and Dennis Nicholson, who signed on for equity stakes. Production coincided with the SAG strike, enabling the team to secure exceptional local Toronto crew, talented cast members, and high-end equipment at significantly reduced rates.
“Part of the challenge in indie filmmaking is how do you tell a story that gets people on board without spending a lot of money on a big star, on crazy effects, on car chases... You really lean into the resources you have and build a story within that.”
— Mark Brombacher, Featured Artist Podcast
Mark highlighted his core philosophy for independent horror: maximizing limited resources by tailoring story elements to accessible settings. By filming in a single remote cabin in the woods, the project emphasized themes of isolation.
Mark noted that impactful horror relies on precise lighting, immersive sound design, and strategic restraint—citing how Jaws built tension by keeping the threat hidden rather than relying on constant visual spectacle.
“Artists need to trust your own taste above the advice of other people. What interests you? And I promise you, if it interests you, then somebody else will be interested in it.”

Closing the interview, co-host Robert Tansley praised Mark's artistic integrity and dedication to his craft, highlighting how his passion and authenticity resonated throughout the film beyond budget limitations. Mark invited viewers to stream the movie and encouraged audiences to reach out directly to share their thoughts and feedback with him
