Leah Rifkin
Featured Artist Podcast by Zaheer Shahid
In September 2022, I had the opportunity to meet Leah Rifkin, an award-winning filmmaker and author of the book Beyond The Director’s Chair. We recorded this podcast at Artscape Daniels Launchpad, Toronto, a non-profit organization that facilitates art studio spaces for emerging and established artists.
In today's digital age, there are numerous platforms for content creators to share their work. However, one of the biggest challenges is how to grow your audience.
When discussing the topic of strategies for growing your audience, Leah points out that knowing your audience is the most important thing when creating content. Additionally, having talent that effectively communicates with the audience can also help in growing the audience.
“It is also talent, like having the talent that draws in the audience really makes a difference.”
Leah is producing a music variety show called The Sonic Room, inspired
by South Korean variety shows.
“…if you are an independent creator and you want to create something, budget wise it's much cheaper to do unscripted.”
Many filmmakers are writers, but there are few who are able to publish a book.
When I asked her what motivated her to write a book: Beyond The Director’s Chair; Leah said that she wanted to highlight the key strategies for becoming an aspiring filmmaker from an entrepreneurial and leadership standpoint.
